Chapter Ten

Sydney stood in the middle of the walk-in closet and studied the expansive display of designer clothes, trying to make up her mind what to wear for the interviews she and Jacqueline were holding for two spa positions tomorrow.

There was still some time before the grand opening, but she hoped to have most of her staff in place long before then just the same.

She was trying to make up her mind between a pair of slacks and a multicoloured blouse, or pairing them with a solid coloured one when she felt the brush of Grayson's hands at the back of her neck.

"Seems I've been neglecting you lately." He swept her hair to one side and she felt his lips at the base of her neck as he kissed it. He handed a black velvet box to her. “Just a little something to make up for my absence…”

She took the box from him and stared at it for a moment. Normally, the prospect of expensive gifts from him excited her. But she felt nothing in the way of excitement tonight, just the feeling of discontentment weighing heavily on her. A much as he'd given her, she had nothing to show for it. Certainly not the happiness she craved.

She'd been thinking about Connor--a lot. How he’d ended up back in her life and he in hers when she’d least expected it and was now in a business partnership with her husband. How she’d had words with him yet again the other day when he was there for his business meeting with Grayson.

She’d pretended it didn’t matter, pretended that she was devoted to her husband, when in truth, the only thing she truly cared about in her marriage, were the reasons she’d married Grayson in the first place. The money, the designer clothes, the lavish trips, the cars, the mansions, and the spa she would soon open.

And the baby he still hadn’t given her.

“Well...are you going to open it or not?" Grayson said, cutting into her thoughts.

“Of course,” Sydney flashed him a superficial grin as she removed the cover from the box. There inside was a shimmering diamond necklace and set of earrings propped against a backdrop of black velvet cushioning.

She stared at it, awed for a moment by its radiance and beauty. It could never be said that Grayson didn’t have amazing taste in jewellery.

By now, he’d already removed the necklace from the box and moments later he wrapped it around her neck and fastened the clasps together.

She looked over at her reflection in the mirror. "It's beautiful…” she said, trying hard not to be wowed by its radiance. She turned and faced him, peering up at him.

“Great. I’d like you to wear it to the fundraising gala,” he said, caressing her cheek.

He was about keeping up appearances and showing off their vast wealth as a high society couple and she wouldn't disappoint him, she thought, hating herself for falling for his materialistic charms once again. If only she didn’t care so damned much about luxuries and material wealth.
